Saving Shackleton’s Villa

The Stromness Manager’s Villa, where Shackleton began orchestrating the rescue of his Endurance crew in May 1916, had slipped into dangerous disrepair after decades of abandonment within the derelict whaling station. Recent conservation work, led by the South Georgia Heritage Trust and partners, is stabilising the structure and creating a detailed digital twin so this pivotal place in the story can be explored safely from afar. As BBC News described it, there is now “a £3m race to save polar explorer Shackleton’s villa” at the edge of the sub‑Antarctic.
